"“Lena grew up with nothing. You’re her older sister. What’s wrong with letting her have this one thing?” In my previous life, that was the sentence my mother, Margaret Hayes, said to me most often. Lena had never lived in a nice room, so I gave up my bedroom. She had missed the cutoff for an elite college program, so my mother asked me to withdraw from the Hayes Foundation’s Columbia Honors Fellowship and let Lena take the family-backed recommendation in my place. Chapter 1

“Lena grew up with nothing. Later, when Lena wanted to work at Hayes Group, my mother said again, “The company will be yours one day anyway. What’s wrong with letting Lena sit in your office for a while?” So I gave in. Again and again. In the end, I gave away the Hayes family itself. Only after my grandfather and I were forced out of our own home did I learn the truth. The so-called poor student my mother had sponsored for years was actually her biological daughter, born in secret after she married into the Hayes family. And because Lena was afraid my grandfather and I would return to take Hayes Group back, she drove straight into us. Before I died, she stood in front of me and smiled. “Vivian, thank you for giving me everything.” When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the first day Lena moved into the Hayes estate. My mother pointed at my bedroom. “Lena has never stayed in a room this nice. Give it to her.” I looked at my mother. Then I looked at Lena, who had already dragged her suitcase upstairs. It had been exactly like this in my previous life too. My mother had not even asked whether I agreed. She simply brought Lena to my bedroom door. In her eyes, as long as she spoke, I would obey. But this time, she was wrong. “No.” My mother froze. “Vivian, what did you just say?” I smiled. “I said I’m not giving her my room.” Lena’s face paled slightly. She immediately grabbed my mother’s arm. “Mrs. Hayes, it’s okay. I can sleep anywhere.” “Being allowed to stay here is already more than enough. Please don’t argue with Vivian because of me.” Before she finished speaking, her eyes had already turned red. Exactly the same as before. Sure enough, my mother’s heart softened at once. She patted Lena’s hand, then turned to scold me. “Vivian Hayes, when did you become this selfish?” “Lena suffered so much growing up. You were born into this house. You’ve had the best of everything since the day you were born. What’s wrong with letting her use your room for a few days?” I looked at her. “What does her suffering have to do with me?” “Did I cause it?” My mother choked on her words. I had no interest in wasting more breath on her. I called the house manager over directly. “Mr. Collins, prepare the downstairs guest room.” “And from now on, without my permission, no one enters my bedroom.” Mr. Collins paused for a second, then nodded quickly. “Yes, Miss Hayes.” My mother’s expression darkened. “Vivian, what exactly is wrong with you?” “Lena just arrived, and you’re already trying to humiliate her?” “I’m humiliating her?” I laughed once, then called after Mr. Collins before he could leave. “Wait.” “Don’t prepare the guest room.” My mother’s expression eased a little, probably thinking I had changed my mind. The next second, I continued, “Go bring Max in from the yard.” “From now on, Max can sleep in the guest room.” Even Mr. Collins was stunned. “Miss Hayes, Max is a dog.” “I know.” I turned to Lena. “If staying in the guest room is too humiliating for her, she can sleep in the doghouse.” “Max can take a two-day break. She can cover his shift.” Lena’s tears fell instantly. “Vivian!” My mother’s face turned livid. But I had no patience left to listen. I turned, went into my room, and shut the door. Outside, Lena’s injured voice soon drifted through. “Mrs. Hayes, please don’t blame Vivian.” “She probably just doesn’t like me. It’s really okay. I can sleep on the couch.” My mother was heartbroken. “Don’t listen to her!” “She’s been spoiled rotten. Tonight, you’ll sleep with me. I’ll have someone add another pillow.” Lena was still pretending to hesitate. “But will Vivian be even angrier?” “This family is not hers to rule!” I listened from behind the door and found it laughable. In my previous life, I had listened to words like that again and again. Then I gave in again and again. I gave up my room. My school opportunity. My company position. In the end, I gave up my life. Not this time. After the hallway finally went quiet, I took out my phone and found a number I had not contacted in years. It belonged to a private investigation firm my father had worked with before he died. When the call connected, I sent over Margaret Hayes’s and Lena Ward’s information. “I need you to investigate two people.” “As thoroughly as possible.” The person on the other end asked, “Where would you like us to start, Miss Hayes?” I stared at Lena’s sweet, harmless photo on my screen. “Start from her birth.” “Hospital records, school history, and every financial record connected to Margaret Hayes’s sponsorship of her.” “I want all of it.” In my previous life, I had died too late. I had learned the truth too late. This time, knowing who Lena was would not be enough. I needed evidence.

Chapter 2

The next morning, just after breakfast, Margaret brought Lena into my room. Unlike the day before, she did not come in angry. She even held a document folder in her hand. After sitting down, she softened her voice in a rare show of patience. “Vivian, I was too harsh yesterday. I didn’t consider your feelings.” “You don’t want to give up the room. Fine. I won’t force you.” I looked up at her without answering. Ever since I was little, whenever she used that tone to comfort me, something worse always came next. Sure enough, Margaret placed the folder on the table. “Lena didn’t do well enough on her college applications this year. The schools that accepted her are honestly not good enough.” “I want to discuss something with you.” “You two should switch opportunities.” I lowered my eyes. Inside the folder were my Columbia Honors Fellowship materials. In my previous life, she had placed these same papers in front of me. Back then, I had cried. I had argued. Because I had worked for three straight years to earn that fellowship and the family-backed recommendation attached to it. But Margaret had told me that since I would return to Hayes Group anyway, it did not matter what school I attended. Lena had nothing. A top university opportunity could change her entire life. In the end, I gave it to her. That concession had been the start of everything. When Margaret saw that I stayed silent, she assumed I was wavering and immediately continued. “Your grandfather has said for years that Hayes Group will be yours one day.” “What college you attend won’t affect you much.” “Lena is different.” “She has no family background, no connections. In the future, she’ll only be able to rely on herself.” “Just help her this once.” Beside her, Lena lowered her head and spoke softly. “Mrs. Hayes, forget it.” “Vivian earned this herself. I really don’t dare take it.” She said she did not dare. But her fingers remained wrapped tightly around my acceptance materials, with no intention of letting go. I reached out and pulled the folder back. Lena froze. I placed the documents neatly back inside. “You couldn’t earn it yourself, so now you’re trying to take mine?” Her face turned white. Her eyes reddened. “Vivian, I’m not trying to take anything from you.” “Mrs. Hayes felt bad for me and only mentioned it.” “If you don’t want to, I definitely won’t accept it.” Margaret’s face darkened too. “Vivian Hayes, why are your words getting uglier by the day?” “What do you mean, take?” “It’s only switching schools. It won’t kill you.” I laughed. “If she wants to attend a better school, she can earn it herself.” “What belongs to whoever earned it—that’s a very simple rule. Do I need to teach it to you?” Margaret stared at me. After holding herself back for a long time, she finally slammed her palm against the table. “You’ve had everything since you were born.” “The best house, endless money, the best schools.” “Even all of Hayes Group will be yours someday.” “Lena suffered for so many years. What’s wrong with giving her a little?” “How did you become like this?” “Arrogant. Spoiled. Selfish. Completely unable to tolerate anyone else.” I looked at her furious face. The last trace of daughterly feeling I had for her faded little by little. So in her eyes, because I had more, I deserved to keep giving. I suddenly smiled. “I’m arrogant?” “Spoiled?” “Fine.” “Then today, I’ll show you what real arrogance looks like.” Before Lena could react, I picked up her acceptance packet. “Vivian, what are you doing?” Rip. I tore the page straight down the middle in front of her. Once. Twice. A few more times, and the entire acceptance letter turned into scraps scattered across the floor. Lena lunged at me like she had gone mad. “My acceptance letter!” I tossed the last pieces of paper at her feet. “You think you deserve college?” “Vivian Hayes!” Margaret was furious and rushed toward me. “Are you insane?” “How dare you tear up Lena’s documents?” I had no interest in listening. I turned and left the room. Behind me, Lena’s crying started almost immediately. Margaret’s voice followed, comforting her while calling me more and more undisciplined. Just as I reached the bottom of the stairs, my phone rang. It was the investigation firm from last night. The person’s tone was noticeably serious. “Miss Hayes, there’s a problem with Lena Ward’s early records.” My steps stopped. “What do you mean?” “Parts of her childhood files appear to have been altered. The birth hospital doesn’t match, and there’s a gap in her household registration history that can’t be traced through normal channels.” “Also, the funding records from Mrs. Hayes are unusual in both source and timing.” I stood at the foot of the stairs and slowly looked up toward the second floor. So Margaret had started preparing earlier than I had imagined. I tightened my grip on the phone. “Keep digging.” “Find out who tampered with those files. I want everything.” The call ended. Lena’s sobs still drifted faintly from upstairs. I lowered my eyes and smiled. Cry while you can. There will be plenty more later.

Chapter 3

The next day, I received a call from Hayes Group’s executive assistant. Her voice was low, as if she were afraid of being overheard. “Miss Hayes, Mrs. Hayes brought Lena Ward to the company today. She told HR to issue Lena an employee badge and said she’d arrange for her to move into a management-track position soon. I thought I should tell you first.” I held the phone and laughed softly. First my room. Then my school. Now Hayes Group. How had I failed to see in my previous life that mother and daughter were in such a hurry? I picked up my car keys. “Hold the badge. I’m coming over now.” By the time I arrived at Hayes Group, Margaret was showing Lena around the finance department. Several department heads were with them. Margaret smiled as she introduced Lena. “Lena is still young. She’ll be coming to the company often to learn. If there’s anything she doesn’t understand, please help her.” Lena followed obediently at her side, greeting everyone in a sweet voice. “Mr. Walker, I’ll be troubling you in the future.” “Ms. Patel, I don’t know much yet. If I make mistakes, please tell me.” The department heads exchanged glances. They were probably all guessing whether this girl personally brought in by Margaret Hayes would soon enter Hayes Group’s management. When Margaret saw me, her eyes lit up. She waved me over. “Vivian, perfect timing. You grew up coming to the office with your father. You know this place well. Show Lena around.” I stopped in front of them and looked at the HR director beside her. “Has Lena Ward’s badge been issued?” The HR director looked uncomfortable. “The request has been submitted, but it hasn’t been issued yet.” “Cancel it.” The hallway fell silent. I continued, “Cancel all follow-up position arrangements as well. From now on, if Miss Ward comes to Hayes Group, she follows the standard visitor process. Without an appointment, she is not allowed into any office area.” The HR director looked at Margaret, then at me, and finally nodded. “Yes, Miss Hayes.” The smile on Margaret’s face vanished completely. She pulled me aside and lowered her voice. “Vivian, what exactly are you trying to do? Lena only wants to learn. Now you’re blocking even that? Since when did you become this petty?” “This is a company, not our living room.” I took the company policy file from the administrative director and flipped to the hiring procedures before handing it to Margaret. “All formal positions at Hayes Group require applications, interviews, and evaluations. What does Lena have right now? No relevant degree. No work experience. Other people earn their way in through ability. Why should she get in with one sentence from you?” Lena hurried over and explained softly, “Vivian, you misunderstood. I’m not trying to take any position. I just wanted to learn more. If you think I’m not suitable, I won’t come anymore.” Her eyes reddened again as she spoke. The moment Margaret saw that expression, her face went cold. “Enough, Lena. You don’t need to apologize to her.” She turned to me. “I am currently managing Hayes Group. I still have the authority to arrange one person to come learn.” I smiled. “You have authority, and I don’t?” Margaret paused. In front of several department heads, I called the executive assistant over. “Notify the board office. Starting today, Margaret Hayes will only be responsible for daily operating matters. All personnel appointments, major financial approvals, and management-level changes will return to the board office and the executive team my grandfather left in place for joint review.” Margaret’s face instantly paled. “Vivian Hayes, what right do you have to do that?” I looked at her. “The right that comes from Hayes Group bearing the Hayes name.” “I have worked for this company for years,” she snapped. “After your father died, I was the one who held Hayes Group together. And now you’re cutting my authority over something this small?” The more she spoke, the more agitated she became. Around us, the department heads did not dare raise their eyes. I took the document my assistant handed me, signed it, and turned to leave. Behind me, Margaret’s voice rang out. “Vivian Hayes, come back here!” I did not look back. Just after I drove out of the company’s underground garage, the investigation firm called again. “Miss Hayes, we found it.” I slowly stepped on the brake and pulled over to the side of the road. The investigator continued, “Lena Ward’s early birth records were not fully erased. We compared them. Margaret Hayes is her biological mother. Based on the date, Lena was born after Margaret had already married into the Hayes family.” “According to Margaret’s travel records, after giving birth to you, she spent more than a year away from home on extended business trips. That is likely when Lena was born.” I held the steering wheel without speaking. “In addition, besides the public sponsorship records, Margaret has privately transferred a large amount of money to Lena. Some funds passed through several accounts first. We need more time to organize the complete record.” I looked at the Hayes Group logo outside my window and slowly smiled. “Organize everything. Don’t miss a single transaction.”
